『Enlightenment and History』은 『깨달음과 역사』 영문판이다. 민주화 요구가 거세지던 1980년대 중후반, 무엇이 시대에 부합하는 불교인지 고민했던 현응 스님의 성찰이 담긴 책이다. 책 제목에서 말하는 깨달음이란 변화하는 관계성의 법칙, 즉 공의 시각으로 삶을 조망하는 것이고, 역사란 현실에서 살아가는 ‘존재들’의 삶과 그 삶이 벌어지는 장소를 말한다.
