첼로로 노래하는 앙코르 소품집

2023년 Orchid Classics에서 발매한 첫 소품집 앨범에서 첼로와 피아노를 위한 다양한 편곡을 시도했던 여정의 연장선에서, 이번 앨범에서도 첼로의 음색을 통해 사랑 받는 피아노와 바이올린 작품들에 새로운 숨결을 불어넣고자 했습니다. 첼로 레퍼토리의 좁은 경계를 넘고자 한 이 작업은, 음악가로서의 시야를 넓히고자 한 저의 진심 어린 시도이기도 합니다. 그리고 이 앨범은 무엇보다도, 저의 감정과 기억, 그리고 영감들을 조용히 담아낸 소리의 기록입니다. 이번 앨범에 수록된 곡들은 화려하거나 기교적으로 두드러진 작품은 아닐지도 모릅니다. 그러나 이 곡들은 오랜 시간 제 마음 깊이 자리 잡고 있었고, 긴 하루의 끝에서 휴식이 필요할 때나 삶이 유난히 고단하게 느껴지는 순간마다 제가 즐겨 들었던 곡들입니다. 어떤 곡은 슬픈 노래처럼, 어떤 곡은 흘러가버린 순간에 대한 회상처럼, 또 어떤 곡은 기억 속의 한 장면처럼 다가옵니다.

열다섯 살에 예원학교를 졸업하고 고등학교 1학년의 나이로 한국예술종합학교 음악원에 입학했을 때, 저는 10대 청소년이었지만 대학생으로서 본격적인 음악 공부를 시작하고 있었습니다. 첼로를 전공하면서도 피아노에 대한 애정을 놓지 않았고, 학사 과정 내내 피아노 수업을 병행하며 공부를 이어갔습니다. 손이 작고 테크닉적인 한계가 있었던 저에게는 웅장한 소나타나 협주곡보다는 서정적인 짧은 소품들이 더 자연스럽고 친근하게 다가왔습니다. 그 시절, 사춘기 시절의 감수성에 깊은 울림을 주었던 바로 그 음악들이 지금의 저를 이끌었습니다.

쇼팽의 전주곡, 야상곡, 마주르카, 드뷔시의 ‘달빛’과 ‘보다 느리게’, 리스트의 ‘사랑의 꿈’, 슈베르트의 즉흥곡 등, 이번 앨범과 지난 앨범, 그리고 무대에서 앙코르로 자주 연주해 온 곡들 대부분은 바로 그 시절 제가 피아노로 즐겨 연주했던 작품들입니다. 그래서인지 피아노 소품들은 여전히 저에게 아주 가깝게 느껴지고, 지금도 제 안에서 멜로디가 살아 숨 쉬는 듯합니다. 악기는 바뀌었지만 음악을 노래하는 방식은 변함이 없습니다. 특히 이번 앨범에 수록된 쇼팽의 전주곡과 슈베르트의 즉흥곡은 제 유년 시절과 가장 밀접하게 연결된 작품들입니다.

클래식 음악을 오랫동안 사랑해 오신 분들은 물론, 처음 접하시는 분들도 부담 없이 즐기실 수 있도록 친숙하고 따뜻한 곡들로 이루어진 이 앨범을 통해 첼로의 따뜻한 음색과 다채로운 감성의 결을 느끼시기 바라며, 분주한 일상 속에서 잠시 숨을 고를 수 있는 평온과 위안을 이 앨범을 통해 전해드릴 수 있기를 소망합니다.

Following the release of my first collection of encore pieces with Orchid Classics in 2023 where I explored a range of transcriptions and arrangements for Cello and Piano, I once again sought to give voice to beloved piano and violin works through the sound of the cello. This album became a continuation of that journey, an effort to step beyond the narrow boundaries of the cello repertoire and broaden my perspective as a musician. It is also a quiet record of my emotions, memories, and inspirations during this particular period of my life, gently shaped through sound. The pieces on this album may not be virtuosic, flashy, or technically dazzling, but they are works that have lived in my heart for a long time. I often return to them in quiet moments, after an exhausting tour, a long day of teaching, or during difficult periods in life. I wanted to capture these pieces just as they are, with the warmth and sincerity they’ve gathered over the years. Some are sorrowful songs, some are farewells, and others are fleeting impressions of love. Each one holds a small, self-contained world of feeling.

When I was accepted into the undergraduate program at the Korea National University of Arts at the age of fifteen, I was still technically a high school student, though already studying at the university. A devoted lover of the piano, I continued taking piano classes for years even though it wasn’t my major. With very small hands and limited technical ability, I naturally gravitated toward lyrical character pieces rather than grand works such as Sonatas or Concertos. These shorter pieces resonated deeply with the emotional sensitivity of my teenage years. At the time, I never imagined that I would one day return to these same works through the voice of the cello. Many of the pieces I’ve recorded on this album are the very works I once cherished at the piano. Perhaps that’s why they still feel so close to my heart and continue to speak to me even now. The instrument may have changed, but the way I sing through music remains the same. This album includes music that even casual listeners may find comforting and emotionally engaging. My hope is that everyone whether a devoted classical enthusiast or a first-time listener can enjoy it with ease. I hope this recording offers not only artistic richness for experienced music lovers, but also a peaceful space of comfort and reflection, a quiet breath amid the noise of everyday life. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to pianists Jiwon Ahn and Zijian Wei, whose artistry brought each piece on this album to life. Each time I work on a new album, I am reminded of the immense dedication and collective effort it takes to bring a recording into the world. To everyone who contributed to this project, I offer my deepest and most sincere thanks.
