이 책은 재키 위긴스(Jackie Wiggins)“Teaching for Musical Understanding”(3)을 번역한 것이다. 저자는 22년의 초고 교육 경험과 12년의 대학교육 경험을 바탕으로, 음악교육에 대한 사회적 구성주의 접근법에 대하여 설명하고 있으며, 특히 이 번역본의 원문인 제3판에서는 문화심리학적 이론(cultural psychology)을 추가적으로 반영하였다.
