『Nong-amjinjeok 農巖眞蹟』 is a collection of epistles and essays written by Changhyeob Kim (1651~1708), a great Confucius scholar of the mid-Joseon Dynasty.

Originally a total of five volumes were compiled; however, today only four have survived. There are a total 86 pieces of writing which are mostly letters written from October 1695 to December 1704. They are mostly composed of correspondences with Sijwa Kim (1664~1727, Courtesy Name is Doi), who was a nephew (4th cousin, once removed) and disciple of Changhyeob Kim. The letters were preserved and passed down within the family for generations. Seonggeun Kim (1756~?), the great-great grandson of Sijwa Kim, edited and bound the book in 1838. The surviving four volumes were registered as tangible cultural heritage number 16 of Daejeon Metropolitan City in March 1989. The books were donated to the Daejeon Museum of History by Younghan Kim (pen name Chungang), descendant of the Cheong-eumgong branch of the Andong Kim clan.

The letters in the book were written by Changhyeob Kim. He was from the Andong Kim clan and courtesy name was Junghwa and pen name was Nong-am. He is the son of Suhang Kim(1629~1689) who served as Chief State Councilor and great-grandson of Sangheun Kim who served as Second State Councilor during the reign of King Hyojong. Changhyeob Kim passed the “literary licentiate” (or jinsa) exam at the age of 19. At the age of 32, he passed the higher literary examinations (or mun-gwa) with the highest honors and was appointed to several important government positions. However, as his father was exiled to Jindo and was eventually executed during the political turmoil in the year 1689 (Gisahwanguk), Changhyeob Kim decided to live in seclusion at Pocheon and Namyangju of Gyeongi Province to devote himself to studying and Confucius teachings. After the year 1694 passed (Gapsulhwanguk), he had been appointed to several important government positions, however he declined all of them. As a great writer and accomplished scholar of his time, his literary style and calligraphy were eulogized with great admiration. Posthumously, he was enshrined in the Royal Shrine of King Sukjong and the Seoksil Seowon in Yangju and Nokdong Seowon in Young-am.

저자소개

저자 Changhyeob Kim (1651-1708)은
Changhyeob Kim is a civil servant and scholar of the mid-Joseon Dynasty. He is from the Andong Kim clan. His courtesy name is Jungwha and pen names are Nong-am and Samju. He is the great-grandson of Sangheon Kim and son of Suhang Kim. He passed the higher civil examination with highest honors. However, right after his father was executed during the political turmoil of 1689 (Gisahwanguk), Changhyeob Kim resigned from the government position and lived in seclusion at Namyangju of Gyeongi Province to devote himself to studying and Confucius teachings. He was a great writer and accomplished scholar of his time and his literary style and calligraphy were eulogized with great admiration.
